The new Pendolina - Fiera line will bring Brescia a more sustainable, efficient and integrated mobility system with metro, buses and trains. Promoted by the Municipality of Brescia, and entrusted to the technical guidance of Brescia Mobilità S.p.A., it’s set to be the most important infrastructure project to affect the city in the coming years.
By implementing the projections of the PUMS (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan) of 2018, it will allow a quantum leap in the public transport offering in terms of regularity, speed and frequency, serving the main urban districts not reached by the automated light metro. It will also help to improve interchange with traffic from outside, increase the number of passengers carried by 47%, and reduce private vehicle traffic by 5%.
A structured project
Initial work on the tram line project began in 2020, and a series of technical, economic and administrative steps have defined its development:
- 8 July 2020 - Council Resolution no. 321
The Municipality of Brescia entrusts Brescia Mobilità S.p.A. with the task of drawing up a detailed economic feasibility project (PFTE). - 30 September 2020 - Council Resolution No. 466
The mandate of Brescia Mobilità to continue with the definition phase of the project is confirmed. - 13 January 2021 - Council Resolution No. 8
The municipality submits an application for funding to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport for a total of €359.5 million. - End 2021
The Ministry allocates the first tranche of funding of €359.5 million. - 2 February 2022 - Council resolution no. 35
Brescia Mobilità is commissioned to develop the final design. - 6 July 2022 - Council Resolution No. 291
Operational guidelines for the final design are provided. - 27 February 2023 - City Council Resolution No. 9
Brescia Mobilità is identified as the implementing body. - End 2023
The Ministry allocates an additional tranche of funding of €63.1 million. - April 2024 - Budget Variation
The Municipality of Brescia allocates €3.7 million as a co-financing share, thus completing the updated overall economic framework of €426.3 million, which is fully covered. - June 2024
The City Council approves the final project and in the same month launches the tender for the integrated contract. - 18 June 2025
The contract for the executive design, execution of works and supply of rolling stock for the Fiera - Pendolina tram line is signed.
The main features
The route will be 11.3 kilometres long and will connect the western part of the city - from Pendolina to the Fiera di Brescia - crossing very busy areas that are currently poorly connected to the rest of the local public transport network.
Along the route there will be 22 stops, served by modern, quiet and comfortable trams, with a capacity of approximately 220 passengers each. The convoys will be electrically powered and, in the city centre sections, battery-powered: a sustainable choice, also from an aesthetic and environmental point of view. The line will guarantee a 6-minute frequency during peak hours, with an average speed of 17 km/h: a punctual and reliable service, designed for daily travel.
Over 70% of the route will be built on reserved lanes, with no interference with vehicular traffic. A solution designed to favour the punctuality of the service and help reduce urban congestion and improve air quality.
Work will begin in early 2026, with an estimated duration of five years. The service is expected to start running in 2030.
The new line represents an important step towards a more connected, sustainable and accessible city.
